Adorable shorts! As for books, I tend to like older ones, like Jean Ray Laury's Handmade Toys and Games, and her Dollmaking: A Creative Approach; Ann Wiseman's Making Things: Handbook of Creative Discovery; Childcraft's "Make and Do" books, and the Ladybird series. Oh! And the old Sunset books are great! Newer ones like DIY Kids and The Creative Family are great too. And The Children's Year has some fun projects and ideas in it too.

I posted about my summer quandary a couple of weeks ago--I'm always looking for things to do. My oldest is almost 8 and she's a Brownie. We're going to work on some try-it badges this summer. Even if you don't have a girl scout, they have great ideas--they list about 8 or 9 possible activites for each badge. Also, I picked up a few volumes of the Childcraft encyclopedia while thrifting a few weeks ago, and those also have some ideas/projects. I print out the grade level reading lists and take those to the library with us when we go (which is usually weekly during summer). Hope this helps!

There is a blog that Belladia.typepad.com started dedicated to crafts and projects for kids. I think it's called "The Crafty Crowe". There are some great ideas on there!

We used to pay our kids 1 cent a page for summer reading. They kept a list going on th fridge. At the end of summer, I would give them their $$ for spending on our vacation. Philip usually read 2000-3000 pages and Heather 1200. Reading to little sibling also counts!

Have you heard of, "The American Boy's Handy Book"? I know this book says "boys" in the title, but it has some great things.

How did I miss this post? This was so well said and so needed. I wish I could print it out and send it home to every parent at my childs school. I don't understand why some people refuse to parent their kids. It's up to us to teach and redirect them. I am so sorry your girl is having a hard time. I remember getting picked on for a while at school until my big brother took matters into his own hands:)

I go through the same thing. It's all ups and downs. Some things I'm great at and in some ways I am simply lame. Your kids a beautiful and obviously happy and well loved. I hope when my girls grow up they make me napkins and buy me purple flowers! Keep up the good work!

parenting is the hardest thing i have ever done, i feel awful at it most of the time myself, i think it is just the stress and fatigue of it all. maybe its just the discipline and whining all the time, but i think kids really need to be "parented" and not just be "buddies" with you. i wish i could hang out with my kids more and not be so naggy all the time... hmmmm.... lots to think about. we are all in this together carol, hang in there!

happy mothers day!
