do I smell grape?

A quick trip down the street to my local farmer’s market, got me thinking about pie!

There was an abundance of concord grapes and so I gave in to make one of my very favorite pies.

Perfect to involve 3 year old hands. Dough is in the fridge, chilling…

I will post the recipe, complete with photos so you can make your own wonderful pie. I swear it’s easy. You can even buy a store bought crust, I don’t care…just make it!

I love sweets. I love cake. I love frosting. I love to bake. I love to eat. I love angelfood cake. LOVE it.

I am torturing myself by keeping away from sugar, but not last night. Last night I was free from my own self-induced rules and fully enjoyed my mom’s birthday cake. As the evening progressed, my cloud of a cake became deflated due to high humidity, but it still tasted heavenly.

Oh- I cheated. I used a mix, but made the fluffy frosting myself.

Now, today will be a little less sweet. I better go find one of my kids and steal a kiss! Their sweetness can sustain- it’s when they aren’t so sweet I look for the REAL stuff.

What do you do to avoid sugar?

I’m joining in with this fun project and found that this post fits in perfectly with the letter “A”.

a party

This weekend (and week) was certainly busy at Moveable Feast. I thought some of you would enjoy shots of a wedding we catered at a nearby farm/park district property.

The work that goes into an event like this is amazing. I am always in awe of the details, strategic planning and obvious creativity.

The team that created the space was my sister’s good friend, RJA design. They did the dinner tables and overall feel of the event and it was totally breathtaking!

Pretty great, huh? Hopefully, the years to come for the new couple will only get better!

outtakes

My sister and her husband are proposing a cookbook to a publisher today. They asked me to take some photos for their pitch and I had a ball. I spent about 3 hours yesterday shooting about 200 photos.

It was totally gratifying to upload them to Walgreens and pick them up as I was off to have dinner with them…now that is technology working for you. (The print job was actually really good, for an instant need sort of thing)

indoor picnic

The sewing machine hasn’t been humming a lot lately. I’m not sure how the days fly by so quickly, but they do and I intend to enjoy each hour of our long summer days. I know there will be plenty of days in July when the heat will be unbearable and we will be indoors in the much loathed (but happy to have!) air conditioning.

Last night I hosted book club. The above shot is the makings of an icebox cake, which was a huge hit. Make it this weekend. Seriously. We drizzled chocolate sauce on the plate before placing the slice and that was pretty spectacular (thanks Ellie for the idea!).

And to make things easy on me I just made a spread of cheese and crudite. It was really good, fun and easy. Wish I did this sort of entertaining regularly…I’m afraid the guest list wouldn’t be too long. Oh well.

Have a good Wednesday (or Thursday)!

vanilla

Vanilla cream won, although you can’t tell by the votes that were left in my comments! My family had a strong opinion and so I took their urging to make the vanilla.

It turned out perfect. The rest went down the street to the neighbors!

There are so many great ideas out there in blogland for families and summer that I want to write tomorrow about my “chore initiative” in my house. Stay tuned.

Speaking of projects, check out my daughter’s 3rd grade project on my husband blog.

uh-huh!

Another pie, but it is for a dinner guest tonight. I intend to send the leftovers with him.

My question-

Should I make vanilla or banana cream? Seriously, if anyone reads this within the next 2 hours and responds, I will make the pie with the most votes.

to market

First trip to the farmers market this weekend…and second pie I made in one weekend with strawberries and rhubarb.

Oh boy.

I need to slow down with the pie making.

I did share with the neighbor- I’m not so bad, am I?

pie goodness

To celebrate the beginning of summer, I decided to make my kids a butterscotch creme pie. Of course it was totally for them! (heh heh)

It was absolutely delicious…crust, pudding, whipped cream…yum, too bad there are no leftovers.

I’m not sure why I have always been intimidated to make pies, but I have and hope to have it down by the end of the summer. I know one book that is full of good recipes is the one shown below. So good!

I see that the author is Amy Butler. Is it THE AMY BUTLER? Have I been under a rock or something?!

Anyway, I got this book at the library last Fall and have been checking it out here and there…maybe I need to get my own copy, it’s that good!

sweets in the mail

Today I looked out my window and saw the Fed Ex guy at my front door.

To my surprise, I received a sweet treat complete with the cutest birth announcement. It also was quite ironic since the babe that was being announced was also in my arms.

As many of you know, I work for my sister and brother-in-law as a baker and I am on their catering staff. They have the greatest retail space- freshly prepared entrees, salads, and baked goods…I believe the surrounding communities are really lucky to have an independently business making great food.

ANYWAY- I thought I would give a plug for a contest they are running on their website. Check it out and enter!

Okay- I must go and eat dinner and then some chocolate…yes!
