ornamental

Okay, think what you want. I have spent the last few days making Christmas ornaments. THERE. I SAID IT!

I was hesitant to even share this bit of information until at least December. But my interest in posting on this blog hasn’t exactly dwindled, but it has taken a back seat. I figured I should just post and at least proudly display my Christmas spirit! I am not one to go crazy with Christmas before Thanksgiving, but it is my desire this year to avoid the crazed state of mind most of us feel…even if we are determined to stay sane! I also have to be overtly organized because of my hectic work schedule. Alright, enough justification.

At some point in my craftiness, I decided to announce to my kids that we are hosting an “ornament making open house”! We are inviting many of their friends and family to drop in on a Sunday afternoon to make ornaments and drink cocoa. I’m so excited. They are so excited. Nathan may be slightly hesitant. He knows how I get when I have a “bee in my bonnet”.

Anyway, so I was leafing through my Martha Stewart kids/ Winter 2005 and found these darling ornaments, but knew it would not work with the 20+ families invited and my lack of vintage buttons…or ability to buy hundreds of buttons. One thing is for sure- I am not a stranger to felt.

I started pulling pieces of felt (both wool and synthetic) from my stash and came up with this guy. I love it and plan to share more of my creations each day this week.

Need a tutorial? Cut various sized circles and just thread them onto embroidery floss. I did use some beads as spacers to ensure that Santa didn’t look like a “flattened Santa”. I think this will be fun for our party, don’t you?

Your santa ornaments are very cute. Thanks for sharing. My daughter and I started on a matchbox advent calendar (another Martha project)this weekend and she seemed to be happy with the outcome. Now the rest is up to me-filling the 24 boxes with either little treats, toys or messages. I look forward to seeing more of your little creations in the week ahead.

I wish I could come to your party. I love to make ornaments!! We used to have 5-6 families over each year before Christmas after going to see the Living Nativity. Each family brought 12 of one shaped sugar cookie. I provided many bowls of colored butter cream icing, sprinkles, etc. Each child made 6-8 cookies to take home. The moms helped and the dads went into the living room to gab. We found sprinkles for weeks in crevices and under the fridge. What fun! :-)
