family dinner

In our house, eating dinner together is a priority. Although my job prevents me from being home 2-3 times a week, I know at 6:00 my husband is rounding up the kids to eat.

It’s not always full of wonderful discussions- often you will find Nathan or I prodding Simon or Penny to eat more or to use their napkins and there is sometimes tears. Is it important? You bet! Where else can you teach your children about the world, good nutrition, friendships, disappoints, but at the table? Eating dinner together is up there in my opinion of quality time (reading aloud is there too!). Since my 2 older kids are in grade school, this is a time reserved for US. Not homework, not computer time.

So here I am glowing about dinner time, but I loathe figuring out what to feed my kids and husband. I have some parameters with our diet since Nathan is a Type 1 diabetic and throw in some pickiness and I literally want to cry. Anyway, each week I create a meal plan which saves me time and money in the long run, but I needed a system.

Since we are committed to healthy, simple eating I decided to list some of our favorite meals and create meal cards. I have decided creating 15 meals that we will eat for the next weeks, rotating each week will help alleviate my stress each week.

Above is the front of my dinner card, listing the main course and sides. And on the flip side (below) is a list of ingredients that I need to make sure we need on hand. Do you think this will work?

I would love to hear from some of you and any dinner recommendations you may have…I need 6 more ideas!

I thought I would start a pictoral account of our meals starting next week sometime. I’m all about sharing ideas to make all our lives easier, but also to feed our kids well and with as little processed ingredients as possible. Anyone else on board?

I’m in! Last week was my first week “back” to a planned dinner menu with a focus on sticking to the plan!!! Over the past, umm, year, I think, I have been very unmotivated and unorganized when it comes to cooking. Anyhow, I’m ready for a better plan around my place!

I really luv, love, LOVE your idea! It’s so simple and yet so practical! I’d be happy to be your meal plan sharing buddy!

I can relate! My husband is a Type 2 diabetic, I am a vegetarian (although I eat more fish since his diagnosis) and I have two picky kids (11 and 13). We tend to do a lot of rotating meals, but after a while one or all of us start to get tired of some of the previously popular meals.

Last year I started working for the Meatless Monday Campaign, a non-profit public health campaign that encourages Americans to eat more vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains and less meat. They have a lot of great recipes for salads, side dishes, and main dishes. It has definitely helped me expand our meal choices. Check it out sometime at http://www.meatlessmonday.com

What a great idea! I love the cards with the ingredients on the back, so you can mix them up without re-writing anything. So smart.

I love your idea for cards! And you must make a template that I can download because your drawing is so cute! I was just thinking that I really need a better plan when it comes to dinners. I just did food for 75 people and it was overwhelming, but it made me think that I should do one HUGE meal a week and freeze enough for multiple weeks, then rotate pre-frozen dinners. I love the idea of “once-a-month cooking”, or “freezer cooking”, but can’t wrap my head around handling multiple recipes all on one day. Anyway, your idea for cards would come in handy for regular menu planning or freezer dinner menu planning, so I think I will have to try it.

I love the cards, I spend lots of time leafing through my everyday food mags to find ingredients each shopping day.
I love this Italian pot roast recipe from everyday food. Some days you just need to use the crock pot. It’s especially good as a sandwich on crusty bread.

Fantastic idea. I do something similar – I have a huge white board which is attached to a door in the kitchen On this I have the days of the week and I write in our meals for all week. I also have a suggestions / requests area where the kids can put in other meals that they’d like the week after. I also have a shopping area, where I can scribble odds and ends that I run out of that I would otherwise forget and lastly I have a section where I write everything that I put in my freezer – as I am so forgetful of what’s in there… this way at a glance I can see what’s there and what I can use / defrost for that weeks meals…

I do like the idea of the meal cards with the ingrediants on the back… I think that is now an idea I can get my daughter to help me with and we can write down the method and (I say this pleadingly) it might help the family to cook and give me a night off heehee! x

You Rock! With 3 kids who are getting more “opinionated” about food as they get older, I’ve grown toward meals with lots of components–like grilled chicken with potatoes and green beans and pesto on the side, so each person can mix and match what they like, instead of a big one-dish meal, like for instance lasagna. I’m also finding we’re eating a lot of tacos and fajitas because I can mix it up with different filling ingredients and they aren’t the same all the time. I will be interested to hear more on this subject! And the cards–what a great idea!

Carol, I love this menu idea! Could we share it on Erin’s website? People who have to cook all their own food from scratch need inspiration and ideas! Your drawings are so cute too. Dinners together are so worthwhile, fun and important! I heard somewhere that children who eat dinner with their family 5 nights a week are way less likely to… Hmmmm, what was it?… have problems with reading/drugs… or something like that! You know… Anyway… it’s very good for kids!! :-)

This is great, Carol! I started meal planning a couple months ago, and it has made all the difference in the world. I admit, I’ve slacked off in the last couple of weeks, but I’m determined to get back on track.
One thing I found helpful was to clear off two shelves in my pantry (the eye-level shelves) every Sunday and fill those shelves with all the ingredients I’ll need for the week (minus the fridge stuff, of course). I even take baking ingredients from the baking drawer and put them there. That way I’m not wasting time hunting around for what I need. I just go to my two shelves.
Love your cards, too. I recently painted a wall in my kitchen with chalkboard paint and my plan is to list the meals up there but I haven’t done that yet.
