seeing rainbows

Last night, we had our official “spring thunderstorm”. Complete with a scary sky, thunder, lightning, high winds and a rainbow popping up in the eastern sky!

Our house is also seeing some cute rainbow shorts I made Ellie. Here’s the low down: I spent about $1.50 for the fabric… they are not too short…they are cute…and they didn’t cost $20…I love it!

Our house has also discovered a graffiti artist. Penny came forward to confess such offenses. She is well aware that houses are not paper and that writing “No Ellie or Simon” in her language is not cool for family relations.

You can be sure I have more shorts cut out for this girl! I’m so happy that she accepts my homemade endeavors!

By the way, school will be out very soon. Any book recommendations for kid crafts, projects, gardening? I’m getting ready to plan my summer activities and knew I could ask a few of you for some help!

Have you heard of, “The American Boy’s Handy Book”? I know this book says “boys” in the title, but it has some great things.

We used to pay our kids 1 cent a page for summer reading. They kept a list going on th fridge. At the end of summer, I would give them their $$ for spending on our vacation. Philip usually read 2000-3000 pages and Heather 1200. Reading to little sibling also counts!

There is a blog that Belladia.typepad.com started dedicated to crafts and projects for kids. I think it’s called “The Crafty Crowe”. There are some great ideas on there!

I posted about my summer quandary a couple of weeks ago–I’m always looking for things to do. My oldest is almost 8 and she’s a Brownie. We’re going to work on some try-it badges this summer. Even if you don’t have a girl scout, they have great ideas–they list about 8 or 9 possible activites for each badge. Also, I picked up a few volumes of the Childcraft encyclopedia while thrifting a few weeks ago, and those also have some ideas/projects. I print out the grade level reading lists and take those to the library with us when we go (which is usually weekly during summer). Hope this helps!

Adorable shorts! As for books, I tend to like older ones, like Jean Ray Laury’s Handmade Toys and Games, and her Dollmaking: A Creative Approach; Ann Wiseman’s Making Things: Handbook of Creative Discovery; Childcraft’s “Make and Do” books, and the Ladybird series. Oh! And the old Sunset books are great! Newer ones like DIY Kids and The Creative Family are great too. And The Children’s Year has some fun projects and ideas in it too.

    those shorts are really sweet
    what was the pattern?

    for books

nancy drew but, they may not be ready for that

    for craft

what about some hand sewn leather pouches where you punch the holes and string them together or friendship bracelets or those ribbon barrettes

or perhaps they may want to try out some embroidery or cross stitch

there is always watercolors outside and washing off in the sprinkler

my kids are only 2 1/2 and 3 months so these are just a few that come to mind
    have fun
