a trip to the city

A trip to the city was a thrill for the Shackelford family. It was just what we needed- a day away from the everyday and a reminder that we live near one of the coolest cities in the country. One of the greatest gems, in my opinion, is the Art Institute of Chicago. It is full of famous art that I doubt is taken for granted, given the crowds we endured on Saturday.

A train ride was fun for the kids- a little long, a car ride would be much faster, but the gas we saved was worth the time. Plus, arriving at the station and being apart of the bustle is so fun and something I want my kids to experience.

As always, it’s fun to discuss art with children. This has always been a long time interest of mine and my kids did not disappoint. Especially when they were questioning a lot of the Modern Art. My husband and I explained the art processes of most artists and showed them specific examples of our explanations…I think we got through! Since Nathan is an art teacher and brings his students to the museum fairly regularly he was also our personal GPS system- perfect.

Of course looking at the many antiquities always blows me away. The kids picked up on my enthusiasm- hurrah.

A trip to nearby Millenium Park was also a treat. Simon was smittened by “Cloud Gate” the famous sculpture that so many love to visit and photograph.

Guess what I learned?

Family outings are so much easier now! No more strollers, diapers, diaper bag, nursing baby, stash of snacks/sippy cups or…here’s the big one…a napping child that needs to take a nap or a meltdown will surely ruin the day! Yes!

I realized that this has been my life for 9.5 years and it is so nice to be in a different stage. Sure, I liked that time and now I am dealing with bickering kids, rolling of the eyes and general sassiness…I think I’m ready!

I love the Seurat painting and I think I would get the chills just standing in front of it. What a great place to have close-by!

Welcome to the “Golden Years!” That’s how I described those years when everyone was old enough to enjoy things and participate fully, yet young enough to still be available to be completely part of the family. Since then I’ve see that description other places, but it just seemed to be the most perfect description! Great photos, as always! Wish you could be here to take pictures for me at our upcoming pirate party! I’m doing it for Erin’s website!

Sigh.. I really need to get you and Nathan’s cell-phone numbers. I was in Chicago this weekend for a highschool class reunion. Was very last minute, and figured you guys were to far from city central to manage to get together… AND here you were.. under my very nose! I stayed in the Hilton on Michigan Avenue. Most of your pictures were within 20 minutes walk from there!! Hrm hrm.. Ah well. Wish I’d managed to meet up, that would have been really neat! Thanks for putting up all these pictures! It’s a beautiful old american city.

I’m glad you had a fabulous time with the kids! It looked like a blast – isn’t it nice to get out of the everyday routine and go see all that the city has to offer?

i totally feel the same with my two, finally the little one is able to walk without constantly asking to be picked up, no diapers and less crying. you are right about the bickering, but when there is lots of neat stuff to look at, they usually stay interested and focused. hey, i am still thinking about your fairy garden and hoping to add some of your ideas to the “kid area” of our garden plot at the community gardens. be sure and update us on it if you do that again this year!!

Hi, I’m new to your blog. We also live in the Chicago area and like to take the Metra downtown. In the summer we spend a lot of time at the zoos and Navy Pier. I’m hoping to make it to more museums this summer. Take care!

Great series of pictures and what a special day for your family. It’s really great that your both artists and can explain the art to your kids. Man, I can’t wait for those years you’re talking about, though Amelia’s pretty darn cute now.

Glad your kids get the train ride, Sorry I can’t be there to take them. We’ve had 12 rides to San Diego with the grands. Now we’ve had a whole bunch with the greats, can’t recall now how many. All the older ones, with Ellie as the exception? Well, with 10 of the, there are plenty of train rides yet to go. Sorry you missed Luke.

Errata. Notice I hit the wrong number, should be 19 great grands, not ten. Ten have had train rides.

I was just at the Art Institute last month during my first visit to Chicago! I was able to see the Winslow Homer/Edward Hopper exhibit. Heaven!
It IS easier to haul a kid around once they get older! Mine is now 4 1/2 and I don’t mind taking her places now that she can do so much for herself.

Love this post. Our “babies” are 2 now and I am finally seeing the next frontier heading my way. We are not yet ready for a day at the Art Institute but soon enough! Looks like it was a fantastic day!
