new beginnings

My kids started off the school year with a 1/2 day today. There is no other way to start the new school year, but to shoot the obligatory photo and then again on the last day as well. I love taking these photos and comparing how they each have changed. I’m really proud of my kids and really grateful for them and their individual sweetness and quirkiness too!

Ellie is in 4th grade, taking violin, and involved in Jr. Girl Scouts.

Simon is in 1st grade (can NOT get over this), in gymnastics, and Tiger Scouts.

Penelope is my preschooler and companion- so glad I still have her around!

What did you do while in grammar school? I feel like I am constantly reminding myself that it’s okay to NOT have my kids busy every night of the week- I didn’t have them to cart them around, right?

They look so cute. Bigger even since last year’s last day of school.

adorable photo. i think we here in the northeast are the last to start school..two weeks left andit’s been raining..raining..raining.
we try to keep it to one or two activities per child at one time..i agree with you and don’t want to overload. sometimes i feel the pressure of not having my kids into so many different things, like they may miss out on something or a chance at something…but in the end , i think they too appreciate being home more and doing family things. hope the first day went well!

wow. it feels like yesterday you posted their 06 back to school pic.
i took piano and ice skating through most of school. with marching band, wayfarers (a mennonite version of girlguides)and scottish highland dancing thrown in at various stages. (oh how i want e to take up the violin - but so far piano seems to interest her more…) xo

How fun! I’m so glad Ellie and Simon are doing the scouts! Plus, violin?! Wow! And of course, I’m very partial towards Gymnastics, so I think it’s great Simon is doing that as well. Sounds like a great time, all in all. Cute picture. (c:

Wonderful picture! They are growing so fast!

During Grammar school? I just went to school and then played at home in the neighborhood, and had a ’school night’ bedtime… that’s it!

Oops, I should have said, “had” in my previous comment. I loved your idea of taking pictures of the kids on the first day of school. I did that with my son. It will be nice to remember that he was going through a phase of covering his face up and making funny faces at the camera. Thanks for the idea. I, too, played the violin - no broken wrists! :0) and was also in Girl Scouts through 6th grade. I think I played soccer, too. But I do not remember feeling too busy.

When I was in grammar school, I didn’t do anything other that go to school, then play. I have have taken dance a year or two, and I do remember being a brownie, but that’s it.

Your kids are so adorable!

So cute! Mine started school this morning too and I do the same picture. I have a 2nd grader, kindergartener, and a preschooler (preschool doesn’t start for 2 more weeks.) They do scouts and one sport–fall is soccer. I hate running around all the time and don’t know how people do it. (A lot of fast food, I think, yuck.)

Funny, I just had that conversation with J & S today (regarding after-school activities). I told them we went to school…then played outside with our friends! No organized sports, “play dates”, etc. Yes, we had piano lessons one day a week and survived not being overscheduled and entertained 24/7. We actually entertained ourselved.
