calling all fairies!

Filed under: around the house — admin at 4:31 pm on Sunday, May 27, 2007

Our weekend, so far, has been absolutely splendid! Lots of planting, enjoying the wonderful weather, bike rides, splashing in the rain and rest.

I have been planning to create a fairy world with the kids ever since I noticed Ellie and her friend making impromptu campsites last Fall. They are so clever and full of imagination!

So, when my husband created 6 raised gardens for me, I knew the front 2 had to be Ellie’s (with the help from Simon and Peppy, and me…ahem!). Yesterday in the rain, Ellie and I ran to our local hardware store and were giddy with ideas. I can only imagine what the guy nearby thought of us discussing the magical powers of a cosmos plant!

We used lots of rocks, sticks, and pine cones from our backyard and added seashells as well. Good thing I am putting to use the 40 lbs. of seashells I hauled from North Carolina.

What I love about this project is that it gives my kids a reason to search in nature and give their treasure a new use. It’s also the first thing someone sees as they walk up to our home- love it.

I can’t wait to watch the early morning walkers stumble upon our new land.

What a fun creative outlet! I think you are right that passer-bys will stop and marvel. Maybe you will meet some new people.

oh fun! we build fairie houses all over in the forest here around our home. then, we check on them….tidy up for them by placing the bowls back on the shelves and/or tables, restack the firewood, replace the roofing, you know help out those busy little fairies…

love what you guys have created!

this is too much! I was just falling in love with a website about fairy gardens last week, and dreaming up how I could do it with emma. I will have to send you the link when I find it in my bookmarks.
I absolutely love this idea. I think it is so full of mystery and imagination and creativity!

I only heard about fairy gardens recently (definitely had a deprived childhood) and now I’m seeing them everywhere! How cool – I love yours! Wondertime Magazine’s summer issue has a piece on them too: http://wondertime.go.com/learning/article/fairy-island.html
