not for me.

I was really excited to make this shirt (above). I had seen similar styles in stores and remembered that the Simplicity 4589 pattern had a version…I thought finding the two fabrics would make a shirt that really “screamed me”. Well, the fabrics do- but geesh, the ruffles just are not for me.

I suppose my son helped confirm my mind when he just looked at me with a smirk while photographing the 1st shirt…In the photo, it doesn’t look as obnoxious. In fact I even considered this shirt as a pajama top, but I honestly don’t think I could rest with this thing on…seriously.

Although I was disappointed I had to get over it and continue my quest. I like the 2nd shirt much better and hope to make a few more. When it’s hot I can wear the shirt as a tank top, which I probably won’t, but maybe…

You’ve adapted it very well. I made a similar ruffly sleeved top for my sister-in-law for Christmas. I think she was as unimpressed as you. Perhaps the secret with frilly stuff like that is to make it in completely “unfrilly” fabric and wear it with a harder sort of look.

okay, it really does look cute in the photo….but i understand. i made a dress a few weeks back…absolute moomoo. it has similar lines as the tank top you’ve made…but not good as a dress. i haven’t taken one photo of the dress. maybe i will before i cut it up leaving to top as a tank and the bottom…it’ll become napkins.

What a cute pattern! You did a good job making it — I’m sorry it didn’t work out like you hoped. I just hate when that happens! Get so excited about a pattern, find a great fabric - and then it just kind of fizzles the closer you get to finishing it. :-(

It might work better if made out of a more ‘drape-y’ fabric. Or you can just find a different style top altogether!

Funny how different views can be taken on the same thing - I LOVE the ruffle - I think it adds something to the sweet simple fabric. But I do see where sometimes the cap sleeve/ruffle makes me feel like my upper arms doubled in size. Great work either way! :) Glad to see you are back
