chit chat

I find myself always trying to figure out how to juggle personal time with all 3 kids. I came up with a notebook/journal idea for my oldest daughter and I to share. We correspond with one another on nearly a daily basis. I hope this is something that we can do that will last throughout her childhood and help with communication. We have been discussing recently the use of acronyms, why her bro. has thrown up so much this week (due to coughing a bit too much!), what I watched on TV as a kid, and what we like to do in our spare time.

Ellie is quite the night owl and loves to read and write in her “lounge” before bed. Because she shares a room with her baby sister, she can’t read in bed like she once used to…so, we cleared out her fairly large closet and now it’s her own place. I think she is headed for a writing career…with late nights reading and writing it’s a natural thing for her. Besides, I like taking time out of my day to sit down and think of my dear girl who is just getting old too quick!

Anyway, I thought I would share this idea. I also think it would be great between spouses and friends. I love writing real notes back and forth. Reminds me of highschool and the fun of a passed note.

Carol, I love this idea! A few weeks back I left Lily a note, which she totally loved, so I know this would work for us. She’s all about writing notes and letters these days. Thank you! I may also use your closet idea one day (if we ever clean it out) because Lily too shares a room with her baby sister. My poor girl has been displaced, often falling asleep on the sofa most nights.

This is such a sweet sentiment and great idea. I bet she’ll cherish these notes and memories as she grows older. I look forward to trying this with my girls as they get older too (they’re only 16 months right now)! Plus, like you said, the beauty of a handwritten note can never be replaced…despite how darn easy typing is!

That is a great idea!! I think this is just the thing my daughter needs. She loves to email me, especially when it’s something about something embarassing….which seems to be everything lately. Thanks so much for sharing!

Glad you are feeling better. My DH and I leave notes for each other…that’s the only way to communicate sometimes. But I have some girlfriends, and we all live miles and miles apart. Ive been thinking of starting a journal for the three of us. Thanks for the nudge.

I found your blog/made for china project by way of Beki (artsycraftybabe) and think it is great. When is your deadline for the stuff? I can probably make 5 or 10 linus blankies for you if you still need them and I have time. Let me know.

i love this idea. how old is your daughter? I can’t remember at the moment. I would love to do this someday with emma, as she gets older. And the image of her tucked away in her “lounge” reading and writing to you is priceless.
Also, seeing that mug peeking out in the photo reminds me that I finally figured out taht I knew Margaret (Park) at Wheaton–I saw something written up about her in our alumni mag and I finally put all these pieces together. I really need to send her an email and see if she remembers me. such a small world….

I love this idea for a parent and child. When I was in college, my roommates and I had an apartment notebook which was the same idea - we were often on different schedules and didn’t see one another for days, but we always wrote notes, jokes, anecdotes, and encouragement to one another, and after a while we got more creative and starting pasting memorabilia in as well. I ended up with it when the year was over and still treasure it as a memento of college life.
