voting night

Filed under: reading — admin at 11:59 pm on Wednesday, November 29, 2006

I’ve been a part of a book club for 3 years. The women in the group have met for 20 years and have obviously been pretty dedicated to reading and meeting on a monthly basis.

My sister invited me to join and it’s something I really enjoy. None of us socialize with one another (beside my sister and me!), but what brings us together is the love of reading. I think it’s pretty cool.

Anyway, last night we had our “voting night”. Everyone comes with book recommendations and we all very democratically decide on a list- I love this night! You would be amazed on how smoothly it goes…

The above books were my selections, although I was really pushing for Funny in Farsi and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. To my surprise, everyone wanted to read the latter book- I just had thought that most of them read ” A Tree” already. I am scheduled to lead the first discussion of the year and anticipate a great discussion…I LOVE THIS BOOK. How many of you read this novel by Betty Smith?

By the way, I plan to read Funny in Farsi during the month of December- I’ll check in with my review later (hopefully!). And I will post our reading list once I get it, I always love to know what people are reading and hopefully some of you will care too!

I read it, and loved it, but I need to read it again! Thanks for making me think about it!

I have that book sitting in a stack on my bureau, but for some reason have never gotten into it. I’ve heard good things about it though and your extra recommendation might just do it!

I read it in my sr. year of high school, and loved it. It was one of those books you just never wanted to end. I’d have long discussions with my English teacher about it, and for a graduation present, she gave me a copy of the book. After nearly two decades of moving and paring down my belongings, I still have that gift. One day I’ll pass it on to my daughters, and I hope they’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

We actually start our voting in September. We have a two tiered voting system to get the number to a reasonable size. We just got our finals for next year a few weeks ago. LOL I just LOVE my book group.

This is my year to read everything I should have read by now but didn’t. I actually read To Kill A Mockingbird last year for the first time, I just requested A Tree Grows in Brooklyn from BookMooch, and I’m getting Les Miserables online a page a day. It may take me a while to finish that one!

We read “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” in my book club (we are mere babies in comparison to your group, we’ve been around only 5 years) and it was the first time I’d read it.

I LOVED it, BTW.
