old patterns, new clothes

A couple of weeks ago, amongst the shower planning and relative visiting, I sewed some things for Penelope. I realized after going through some of Ellie’s hand-me-downs that the seasons didn’t overlap nor their sizes. SO I started sifting through some fabric and patterns I have collected and have started my list.

I really am challenging myself to make a good amount of Peppy’s wardrobe. I really enjoy making things for her…it also gives me much more confidence with my machine and pattern reading (or NON-reading!).

Did you notice that I actually made a button hole?! I remember in high school, it took me weeks to make my “semester long” dress project. I think there was like 4 buttons- pathetic, I know! I can’t take all the credit for the button hole. My husband was kind enough to figure out my machine and the little mechanism that goes with it for holes. I am a much better student when someone SHOWS me a process.

Here’s the girl wearing her pinafore. I found the pattern at a thrift store and it was one of my most prized finds for the summer. I actually found about 6 patterns all in Penny’s size from the 70s- I think! Stay close for some more sewing “Show and Tell”.

Hi Carol,

I had fun today finally catching up on your blog. I’ve missed your beautiful photos! Madeline and Abigail had fun seeing Ellie, and all their other cousins. Thanks for keeping us all up!

cute pinny, I love how you use the binding on the hem. So much easier and it looks great. I would love to find a pattern, I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for one.

Very nice! I am the same way about button holes… fear and trembling… Hey, and I think I bought the same sewing machine as you have! (I compared it to the picture of your out on the deck) I really like it! I know it has an easy button-holer, I just haven’t had a reason to try it out. Fortunately, baby quilts don’t need buttons.

It looks great! I like the contrast you get from using binding for the hem. Cute, cute!

What a great pattern for that pinafore and your little one looks great in it. I have come across some good patterns at my local thrift store lately. Only thing is I can’t sew anything right now since my machine is broken and I am saving for a new one.

awesome! I have a 1970s pinafore pattern that I am devoted to, as well! I have made loads of them for my little girl. this one is especially cute, as is the model. :)

I love the pinafore…where did you get the pattern? I’ve got the fabric all waiting to make one for the littlest here but I can’t seem to find a pattern that doesn’t have buttons right at the shoulder straps.
