red around and “Corners”

I haven’t posted in “Corners of my Home” for some time now and thought I should keep up with my membership. We have been busy finessing our kitchen and I have become quite pleased with the results. Our kitchen is really the center of our home…physically speaking. So I have really wanted it to reflect us, since we spend so much time in this place.

When we bought our house 4 years ago, it was the exact opposite of my style. The exterior was pink and blue for one thing. The owner then took that color scheme and splashed it all over the house. Oh- except the chartreuse bedroom with ladybug wallpaper- not cute, believe me.

Anyway, we knew we should jump at the chance of purchasing a place and looked past the “outhouse wallpaper” and “Winnie the Pooh” border in the dining room. Needless to say, we put a lot of sweat equity in this place and I can say honestly I am proud. For the 6 weeks before we moved in, Nathan and I worked our tails off to get this place tolerable.

Please do not think I am a design snob, I totally appreciated that the woman that lived here beforehand loved this place. Maybe a litte too much, along with her liquid nails and plexiglass!

So the change in this photo is that I painted the insides of the doors cream. Two years ago, I painted really ugly cabinents this green color and it was an improvement. I totally resisted the “Home Depot” kitchen look and was happy they painted so well. But the green got to be too much. Oh- and the window frame got a fresh coat of paint. So much better!

Have a nice weekend. I will be travelling to Iowa alone this weekend to visit my mom and Grandma. It will be a tough visit, but I am anxious to see my mom.

i like the red/green combo. you have a nice simple, unique, and fun taste, i love it. an old house provides so much to work with and you’ve worked well WITH it.

I love the red doorknoob! I agree with Sara, it’s a lovely color combo.

Prayers as you travel, your dear Grandma has been in my prayers and continues to be.

How can you be a design snob to proclaim a “Winnie the Pooh” border in the dining room” not to be cool ?

I am also dealing with a previous owner’s design taste. At the moment I am eradicating his love for growing and nuturing weeds as plants, and from using plumbing pipes as planters.

I think I would be a tad disappointed to move into a home that didn’t have weird-arse discoveries to roll my eyes at ! :)

hello carol. surprise! i found your blog. how is life back in the midwest (or ‘back east’ as i sometimes call it)? your blog is really beautiful. i hope iowa was a nice time for you. we are loving bellingham, where we have ended up for the time being. i think you guys would honestly really dig this place. they call it the ‘city of subdued excitement’. elise figures it’s because there’s lots going on - arts and music, etc - but people are so darn laid back (which is all right with us!). there is lots of green. we live across the street from a arboretum (think ‘forest’ not ‘morton’) and when it rains it smells like your camping. we live close to the ocean where it smells like seaweed and crabs (lots to catch for jude and esme’) and the tide comes in and out always keeping you on your toes. and then there is the backdrop of mountains, most prominently, the perenially snow-capped mt. baker to the east.

i read up about poor departed beatrice in ellie’s blog. but your new little one is quite dear. please check out my blog - golightlydearthames.blogspot.com - to find my email address. it isn’t near as cool as yours, or as updated, but it is something to see. be sure to see june and july archives for pix of the kids since coming here.

hope you are all doing well. we miss you guys, your spunk and artistry. tell nathan i tried my hand coffee roasting for the first time about 2 months ago. it produced mixed results, but mostly i was glad i finally did it. i’m working at starbucks again, which means i don’t have as much drive to roast, but i’m going to get back into it.

hope to hear from you guys sometime. peace and blessings to you and your family.
