clothing, laundry, organizing…

It’s funny how this blog changes from day to day. I began keeping a blog to document my familie’s life for me to enjoy in the future. And then, as my interest grew in other people’s writings, it has become a great way to learn about other families and how they live.

Anyway, I want to share something I have reinstated this summer with my kids…Each of them have 5-7 large bags with outfits in them. In the morning, while I am doing something, and they need to get dressed, I just say “go pick out a bag”. Within minutes, they are dressed and I am happy.

It really is THAT easy. They have a choice of what they are wearing, but I have a bit of control over the actual outfit. I know it sounds controlling, but my kids really have no opinion on their fashions. This way, as I am putting away laundry I can fill up their bags and know what is being used, grown out of, etc.

I used this method last summer and part of the school year. It was a challenge to do the bag thing when our weather would be so erratic (especially in the Fall and Spring), so the system sort of dwindled.

I also used this idea when we went to the shore last summer. It was so nice to have the kids’ clothes organized and it eliminated unecessary items for the suitcase.

Anyway, I hope this tip helps some of you. Obviously, if your child likes to express themselves through mismatched outfits this wouldn’t work…but you could have them help you fill the bags.

On a side note- since I really can be crazy, I plan to make cloth bags with their intials. I know…I am horribly a nut.

Hi - I found your site last week and have enjoyed it so far. Thanks for this tip! My kids are young (3 and 1.5) but I think this will work very nicely soon. Ellie is so adorable; my 3-year-old is called Ellie as well :)

I did this sort of thing for myself when I was still in the Army (i.e. a t-shirt, underwear, and black socks per bag, kept it all dry and easier than digging in a duffle bag for individual items). I think I’ll try it again for myself and the munchkin for our Wisconsin trip, then I’ll know I’ve got us covered (excuse the pun!).

I think that is such a great idea! I haven’t run into problems dressing my kids yet because my son is only almost two an my daughter 6 months, but I can see this really coming in handy as they become more expressive. Thanks for the idea!

I have to say, I picked this up from Carol last year and it has been an enourmous life saver! I was stuck with a ten year old with no fashion sense and a lot of mismatched clothes and a six year old with no concept of dressing appropriately for warm or cool weather. I would send them back to change and of course after they would change they would leave those perfectly clean clothes laying on the floor or toss them in the dirty clothes so they wouldn’t have to pick them up… Arrgh! I keep two sets of ziploc bags, large ones that will fit jeans, long sleeves, and a sweater, and a smaller size for summer outfits. It has made packing soooo easy, too.

what a great idea! My kids have no choice on their fashion at the moment being 2 and 8 months but i’m sure it won’t be long before they are making stand. I’ll keep this idea in mind. thanks.
